Our FAQs
What types of issues can CBT help with?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment that can help with a wide range of emotional and mental health difficulties, including anxiety, depression, stress, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, low self-esteem, and health anxiety. CBT helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours are connected, while teaching practical strategies to help you manage difficulties more effectively.
How long does CBT take to work?
Everyone's experience is different, but many people begin to notice positive changes within 6 to 12 sessions. CBT is a structured, goal-focused therapy that is typically delivered over the short to medium term, with sessions lasting around 50–60 minutes. We'll work collaboratively at a pace that feels right for you to achieve meaningful, lasting change.
What is Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a proactive, person-centred approach that aims to improve quality of life while reducing behaviours of concern. Rather than focusing solely on behaviour itself, PBS seeks to understand the reasons behind behaviour and develops practical, positive strategies that help individuals meet their needs in safer and more meaningful ways.
How is PBS different from traditional behaviour management?
Traditional behaviour management often focuses on responding to behaviours once they occur. Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) takes a proactive approach by understanding the factors contributing to behaviour, adapting environments where appropriate, and teaching new skills that promote long-term wellbeing, independence and quality of life.
Do I need a diagnosis to access CBT or PBS?
No. You do not need a formal diagnosis to access support. Many people seek therapy or PBS because they are experiencing emotional, behavioural or wellbeing difficulties, or have concerns about themselves or a family member. Support is always tailored to your individual needs, regardless of whether a diagnosis is present.
Do you offer a free initial consultation?
Yes. We offer a free 15-minute introductory telephone or video call to discuss your concerns, answer any questions, and help you decide whether my services are the right fit for your needs. There is no obligation to book further appointments.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. Therapy is currently available online, allowing you to access evidence-based support from wherever you are. Face-to-face appointments in North Yorkshire will also be available from early 2027.
Do you work with children and adults?
Yes. Thrive Psychology Services supports children, young people and adults. Services are tailored to the individual's age, needs and goals, and may involve working closely with parents, families, schools or other professionals where appropriate.
What happens during the first appointment?
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll explore your current concerns, relevant background information, strengths, goals and any factors that may be contributing to your difficulties. Together, we'll develop an understanding of your needs and discuss the most appropriate recommendations or treatment plan moving forward.
How much do your services cost?
CBT services are charged at a fixed rate, with an initial 90-minute assessment costing £200 and subsequent therapy sessions £125 per 60-minute session.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) services are tailored to each individual or organisation and vary depending on the level of assessment, consultation and support required. Family support packages currently start from £595, with more comprehensive assessments and intervention packages available for more complex needs. Bespoke quotations are provided for schools, care providers and organisations.
If you're unsure which service is right for you, I offer a free 15-minute introductory call to discuss your needs and recommend the most appropriate level of support.
Do I need a Positive Behaviour Support plan?
Not always. Some individuals and families benefit from a consultation, behavioural assessment or formulation without requiring a full Positive Behaviour Support plan. During the initial consultation, we'll discuss your concerns and determine the most appropriate level of support for your circumstances.
Can CBT and PBS be used together?
Yes. In some situations, individuals or families may benefit from a combination of psychological therapy and Positive Behaviour Support. Where appropriate, these approaches can be integrated to address both emotional wellbeing and behavioural needs, providing a more holistic and personalised approach to support.
